Got too high? We’ve all been there—perhaps you took one too many hits of the vape, or ate a bit too much of your homemade edible. It happens to the best of us. Luckily, it’s virtually impossible to overdose on marijuana, but it’s not impossible to take too much and feel a bit… off. If you find yourself on the other end of a bad high, we’ve got some tips and tricks to help you feel better in no time.
Take A Few Deep Breaths
First things first, if you get too high, try not to freak out or dwell on it. If you focus on how high you feel, you may find yourself facing a panic attack. Take a few deep breaths and keep reminding yourself that the high will disappear on its own within a matter of minutes or within a few hours. After the high wears off, you won’t experience nasty negative effects, save for a bit of grogginess. In short, there’s nothing to panic about, no matter how bad you might feel in the moment.
Stay Hydrated and Grab a Bite to Eat
Cotton mouth is no fun, but it’s even less fun when it’s accompanying an unenjoyable high. Sipping water kills two birds with one glass: it helps battle a dry mouth, but it also gives you something to focus on. While we recommend water, you’re free to drink the beverage of your choice, though we suggest staying away from caffeine in this particular situation.
It can also be helpful to eat something when you feel a bit too high, but what you eat matters. Stay far away from fatty foods, including dairy like cheese, milk, or ice cream, as fat acts as a conduit and can quicken and enhance the effects of marijuana. If you’ve smoked too much, eating fatty food might worsen the situation. If you want to try to lessen the high with a snack, research shows that sugar helps to counteract the effects of THC.
Take a Relaxing Shower
Well, to start, who doesn’t love a good shower after enjoying some cannabis? Not only do they feel great but, if you get a bit too high, they’ll also help bring you down and back to equilibrium. Experts and cannabis connoisseurs alike are unsure why exactly a shower takes a high down a few notches but, nonetheless, many people swear by this trick.
Find a Distraction
As mentioned in our first recommendation, focusing on how terrible you might feel will not help your situation. Because of this, you should pick up an activity to help you focus your attention.
Playing a video game, putting on one of your favorite TV shows, or cooking a meal will help you take your mind off of the way you feel. If you still can’t distract yourself with anything, try calling up a friend to talk.
Take Some CBD
CBD has great potential to relieve anxiety, whether or not it is caused by THC in the first place. Many people believe that CBD is also capable of mellowing out some of the more unenjoyable side effects of THC, therefore counteracting the substance if you’ve taken too much. If you’re on the end of an unenjoyable high, taking a dose of CBD can help bring you back down, or at least help you feel a few degrees closer to normal.
Try Pounding the Pavement
Going for a walk or a light run and getting your blood pumping can also help. Not only will moving your body serve as a distraction from the way you feel, but it will also help speed up your metabolism in the short-term, and therefore help your body turnover the effects of marijuana.
However, if you’ve got too high, it’s important to listen to your body. If consuming too much has left you feeling dizzy, obviously you should stay home. If you’re on a walk or run and start feeling dizzy, slow down and head home, taking your time. What’s more, try to stay close to home when you’re walking off a high. It wouldn’t be good for you to get lost and feel more anxious and paranoid.
If All Else Fails..
If you’ve tried all of the above suggestions and nothing seems to work, you may need medical attention. While overdose is impossible, you may be experiencing a cannabis-induced panic attack and need medical treatment. It may seem daunting to see a doctor for using too much cannabis, but they have your best interest in mind.
If you aren’t feeling anxious, but the suggestions above haven’t worked, your best bet is to try and sleep it off. Taking a quick nap or heading to bed a little earlier than usual can help you get past the bad high without actually having to experience it.
